Reduce image size using Snipping Tool

If the only copy of the images is currently inside the Word document:

  1. In Word, make the image as large as practical on the screen.
  2. Press Windows key + Shift + S to open Snipping Tool. [support.mi...rosoft.com]
  3. Select Rectangle mode and carefully drag around the image you want to capture. [support.mi...rosoft.com]
  4. Open the captured image in Snipping Tool.
  5. Choose Save as and save the image to your computer.
  6. Return to Word and delete the original image.
  7. Go to Insert > Pictures > This Device and insert the newly saved image.
  8. Repeat for the other large images.
  9. Save the Word document under a new filename, so you still have the original.

Why this can help

This effectively creates a new image at approximately the resolution it was displayed on screen, rather than retaining the potentially much larger original photo embedded in Word.

For example, an original photo from a modern phone might be several thousand pixels across even though it only occupies half a page in Word. Recapturing the displayed version removes that unnecessary resolution.

Tip: If Snipping Tool offers JPG/JPEG when saving, try that for photographs. JPEG uses lossy compression, whereas PNG retains full image quality. [learn.microsoft.com]
